A tour of Burnside Bridge, a key factor in the Battle of Antietam, Sept 17th 1862.

A few hundred Georgia riflemen held off the Union troops of Gen Ambrose E Burnside for most of the day. This delay prevented McClellan's Army of the Potomac from winning a potentially conclusive victory over General Robert E Lee's Army.

Please take a look at Video History Today http://www.videohistorytoday.com , the first web site to offer unique collections of re-usable original video clips designed for teachers and students.

The idea behind Video History Today is to give schools the raw material to make mini-documentaries and video essays on historical subjects.

Initial packages focus on World War I (Somme and Ieper areas), The Holocaust, the American Civil War and D-Day & Normandy 1944.

  • Daniel Harvey Hill and Amprose Powell Hill won this battle for Robert E. Lee, thankyfully my cousins from South Carolina saved the day for Lee, otherwise the north would have won with MacClelland and the Burnside Bridge....I don't like an Englishman talking about my history!

  • @Lovetogolf2005 What's wrong with an Englishman talking about American history? America is a great country and your comment completely contradicts what your ancestors fought for, especially getting rid of and yes, defeating the English. Such a shame.

  • Another good job, but God, those red bars are annoying.

  • I know I know. They are there to stop people downloading the clips and reusing them. I make the YouTube clips as part of my workflow when editing raw (no commentary) clips for my school video products. Sorry. Cannot think of a better way.

  • When did you visit. I believe since your visit they have removed the trees on the hill that Toombs' brigade defended.

  • I was there in Sept 07. I know other NPS historical parks have started to clear trees in an attempt to match the conditions at the time of the relevent battles.

  • @VideoHistoryToday You'll enjoy the new book GETTYSBURG... OTHER TIMES. It refers to the bridge twice in the story in a very unique way... check it out at my YouTube site (GETTYSURGbook) or search Amazon. Cheers...

  • You should go home and talk about Galipoli or the Boar War or the Marne....

  • I can understand the need for that. In any event, a big thank you for posting these videos.

  • Thank you very much for uploading. I'm from Germany and I always wanted to see these places.
