Let's take a look at my new Amstrad GX4000 sent to me by a fellow YouTuber (PompreyGamesRoom)

I'll try my best to explain the history of this machine but I won't be able to hook it up because I don't have a proper power supply, SCART to composite cable or PAL to NTSC converter! But I'll show some quick gameplay clips via emulation.

  • How would they have made analog pads work with the digital ports without breaking compatibility with all the controllers that use those ports..? Hence the multiple sets of ports.

  • @donpalmera All I know is on a C64, or Atari 8-bit, or Amiga 500 I can use a digital joystick like an Atari VCS stick or a Sega Genesis controller and than use an analog joystick in the same port. I know even the old C64 has digital and analog pins in the same controller port. Digital joysticks just don't use the extra two pins. So either way you look at it this is a bad design. They could have easily designed one port to use both.

  • I'd say, with the controllers lacking "Start" and "Select" buttons, the GX4000 controller reminds me more of the Master System controller. (Plus, the buttons were labeled "1" and "2" on both.)

  • @gshowguy LOL I know right after I said that I was like duh SMS controller so obvious! Oh well that's what happens when you don't script anything ahead of time. Definately like an SMS controller. Too bad whoever thought not putting at least a start button on the controllers was a good idea?

  • Apparently one of the games (Chase HQ 2) has only one known copy in circulation, and besides the Ocean programmers only 3 people have ever played it. Pretty insane.

  • @MN12BIRD

The C64 and Amiga have analog pins in the digital ports .. which get sampled as an analog value and also output as a digital value (Amiga games that can use an analogue control are very rare btw).. The CPC doesn't do that and the unused pins in Atari style pinout that can be used for analog on other systems are used in the digital connector on the CPC. If they changed the connector it would not work with the existing CPC controllers...

  • worst console ever?

  • I think the other power supply, the 5v, was if connecting to the Amstrad monitor (ie computer). If you need a SCART > composite connector, I have some if you want, being in UK, they are common. Colours though on composite suck, RGB is best on the Amstrad.

  • @andyukmonkey Don't get the CPC+. It has plenty of problems. Get an Amstrad CPC 6128, because it has a built in disk drive, and it's much more common.

  • @MN12BIRD I think they did it so it could be compatible with Atari/Commodore systems.

  • The scart - whatever you want (Analog) Is really easy and cheap. I dont know if you own the first xbox or summit like that then just take out the rbg cables and use that little adapter. Otherwise Scart to RBG out is reallt cheap i think i got one new for around 10 dollars im from sweden so i dont know how common they are in the states but their are once that have an Out an in switch i think thats what you want.

  • I kinda want one and I have no idea why.
