I didn't mean to send my previous commenr just yet.I used to have to help my dog Sam as she had a wheelchair.ppl used to say what a good guy I was for keeping her.The fact is I wasn't good.I loved that dog and needed her more than she needed me

how do you know when to do this? how many times a day should it be done? does he feel when he needs to "go"?

We do it first thing in the morning, last thing at night and at least twice a day throughout the day. Emptying out his bladder manually (since he does not have control over it) helps to prevent bladder infections--not to mention keeps the mess down. It's easy peasy once you figure it out and have a routine.
