[The next day, Sheryll was still asleep but fortunately she could be moved to her own room and out of the ER. Joe was by her side as soon as she was out of the ER. He rested his hand near hers. He rubbed his fingers on the cast she had on her arm and stared into her face. In his mind, he kept picturing her eyes opening. Joe had to blink his eyes to realize that her eyes actually were]
JOE: [Whispering] Sheryll.
[When Sheryll spoke, her voice was rough and low]
SHERYLL: Joe.
JOE: How do you feel?
SHERYLL: Sore and a little stiff. How long have I been asleep?
JOE: Almost 16 hours.
[Sheryll groaned]
JOE: Can I get you anything? Food? Water? A kiss?
[She almost laughed, but the pain in her chest stopped her]
SHERYLL: The last one sounds good.
[Joe smiled as he leaned in close to her. He crushed his lips to her letting out all the worry he had felt watching her lie unknowing. Suddenly, Sheryll pulled away]
JOE: What's wrong?
SHERYLL: [Smiling] I tried to take a deep breath and it hurt.
JOE: Oh.
[Joe waited as Sheryll tried to catch her breath]
SHERYLL: Where's Sam?
JOE: Well, she's...she...
[Sheryll thought of the worst]
SHERYLL: Oh my gosh...she's d-dead—
JOE: No! No, she's not. She's stable and sleeping right now. She was unconscious for a while, but the doctor said she'd wake up after her body has recuperated.
SHERYLL: And the baby?
[Joe shook his head because he didn't want to say it out loud]
SHERYLL: How's Kevin handling it?
JOE: Not very well. Nick is with him right now. We don't want to leave him alone or he might just breakdown.
SHERYLL: He was so happy about the baby.
JOE: Yeah, but we're lucky you two are alive.
SHERYLL: I'm lucky I'm here with you.
[Sheryll moved her hand to place it in Joe's]

[Kevin sat in the chair closest to Sam's bed. He couldn't get closer because of the machines that were around her. He stared at the blank wall wishing she would wake up. Again, his thoughts drifted to the baby. He didn't even get a chance to know if it would be his little princess or little junior. Before the accident, he had pictured him and Sam holding hands in the park, running after their kid dressed in a frilly shirt or a sailor outfit—just like the ones he used to wear. He was even thinking of getting a dog so the baby would have a playmate. Nick, who was sitting in a lounge chair across the room suddenly got up and walked out, his phone vibrating in his hand. Kevin couldn't hear the entire conversation, but he did hear Sheryll's name]
NICK: [Coming back into the room] Sheryll's awake.
[Kevin nodded in Nick's direction. Lucky Joe, he thought, He still has Sheryll and everything is just going to be perfect for him]
SAM: Kevin?
[Kevin rushed to Sam's bed. Her eyes were closed but moving]
KEVIN: I'm right here.
[Kevin took her hand as her eyes met his]
SAM: Kevin, the baby? How is it?
[Sam's other hand moved to her stomach as she read the look in his eyes. Tears blurred her vision. Kevin's hands were suddenly on her face, wiping them away]
SAM: I'm sorry.
KEVIN: It's ok. I'm just glad I didn't lose you. There's plenty of time to have...another baby.
[He tried to put a smile on his face, but gave up]
SAM: I shouldn't have gone with Sheryll. I should've just stayed with you.
KEVIN: Sam, we didn't know that would happen. Don't blame yourself.
[Nick quietly stepped out to give them some privacy]
SAM: But you were so happy I was pregnant.
KEVIN: I was. And I will be again, after we get married.
[This lightened the gloom Sam was feeling over the lose of the baby, but she would still be grieving over the lose of her first child]

[Joe stepped outside of Sheryll's room to give her privacy to change. Nick came up to him as he was coming out]
JOE: Hey Nick.
NICK: Is Sheryll inside?
JOE: Yeah, she's dressing up. Why?
NICK: Sam just woke up.
JOE: Is Kevin with her?
NICK: Yeah.
JOE: Ok. Call Mom and Dad to pick us up. I'll tell Sheryll Sam's awake and we'll stop by her room before we leave.
NICK: Sure thing. I'll probably go home with you guys. I can't stand being in the hospital any longer.
[Nick left to go back to Kevin and Sam. Joe knocked before he went back into the room]
SHERYLL: Come in.
JOE: Sam's awake.
SHERYLL: Really?
JOE: Yeah, let's go see her before we leave.
SHERYLL: Ok.
[But Sheryll didn't move away from the bed where she was putting her clothes into a bag]
JOE: Did you want to talk about something?
SHERYLL: The wedding.
JOE: [Smiling] It's in a couple more weeks.
SHERYLL: I don't think we should get married. Not right now, at least.
[Joe walked closer to her and she looked up at him]
JOE: Why?
SHERYLL: Well, Sam just lost her baby, and Nick and Sarah are over. I don't want to be celebrating when my friends are...hurting.
[Joe understood why Sheryll didn't want to get married yet, but he had been looking forward to that day for years]
JOE: Let's go see Sam and head home. We can talk later.
[She nodded and followed him out]
