Vietnam Ferry Accident Kills 40

A small ferry overloaded with holiday shoppers sank in central Vietnam on Sunday, killing at least 40 people ahead of the traditional Lunar New Year. Most of the dead were women and children. (Jan. 25)

I'm Vietnamese so this story is a sad one. But I imagine this same scenario in America- Black Friday morning.....4am.... to stores about to open. Walmart on one side of the lake, thousands of people on the other. The only thing that can take them over the lake is a small boat meant to carry 20. How many do you think would climb aboard to get to Walmart by 5am? That boat would sink to the bottom faster than you can say, "Titanic".

As for the incident, it was the people that decided to cram each other on a small boat. It gets so crowded sometimes that if u just wait for your turn, you'l never get it. u have to "push".

The owner dont give a fuck as they're only interested in maximising their profit which lead to this terrible incident. This is a sad reality of vietnam where health and safety standard regulation doesnt exist! Not on paper and not in the mind of the people.

Common sense tells you that you cannot that many folks jammed in a small boat like sardines? If it was an ocean liner carrying foreign tourists, then the communist would have done all it could in advance because it fears bad publicity and negative public relations. The communist policy separates the rich from the poor, with the poor always losing out. That is the tragedy.

Accidents are bound to happen, but it sickens me to think that the boats, as with other forms of watercraft transportation in Vietnam, do not have stricter standards. Lives could have been saved if the communist have greater regulations to inspection these types of boats to ensure they are safe and seaworthy. Rather, these corrupt morons are content with the status quo because they see these types of inspections as costly and do not contribute to their bottom line.

"The boat's owner and captain were detained for questioning"? If you're on a wooden boat, there is no "captain" there's just a guy who lets people on it after warning them it's probably going to crack in half and sink.
