The Kabanovs return from church, Káťa appears first, followed by her husband Tichon and mother-in-law Kabanicha. Kabanicha nags Tichon for the lack of attention she feels she deserves as his mother, revealing her possessiveness and dislike of Kat'a. Tichon and Káťa cannot calm her, indeed Kabanicha becomes even worse and complains about how Tichon spoils Káťa. Tichon attempts to get sympathy from Varvara, his foster sister, but she asks why he doesn't defend Káťa instead of drowning his lack of courage in drink.
Nancy Gustafson, Felicity Palmer, Ryland Davies and Louise Winter in the Glyndebourne production conducted by Andrew Davis and directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff.

@lovesGenet It's Czech, I don't have an Internet source for the libretto, but see Opera Glass for a synopsis. There are other Janacek sites worth visiting too. Just Google Janacek

Please do! It's soooo beautiful & intense, as if Janacek reduced the entire opera into it.
