Monday marked the final day of the U.S. government's Car Allowance Rebate System also know as Cash for Clunkers, a term for old cars that consume too much gasoline. The aim of the program is to stimulate the auto industry by offering rebates to owners who trade in their old cars for new ones. Consumers flocked to car dealerships across the country to trade in their vehicles for discounted, more fuel efficient models. VOA's Elizabeth Lee looks into whether the program helped or hurt the automobile industry.

If I saw my neighbor trading in his "Clunker", I would beat him up for wasting a car that could have been given to a poor family or to someone in Africa or something.=)

Hmm offering incentives to boost sales in the short term while creating more debt. Isn't that what GM did which caused them to go bankrupt, and the government solution is... the exact same thing?

Next year, in spring, there ought to be another program with ~slightly~ more stringent requirements, ~slightly~ less money offered, and radically simplified & streamlined administration.
