The skyrocketing price of gold has led to a rush on the precious metal in the United States and throughout the world, but some of the mining involves child labor and a dangerous process involving mercury. NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel journeys to Mali's artisanal gold mines.

  • It's always our fault for anything that's bad because obviously they don't have a government. Africa is and always has been the continent of darkness, ignorant and corrupt.

  • @pdxeddie1111 That still doesn't give the right for first world nations to exploit them resourcefully and financially.

  • What about the dying and killing going on on the chocolate plantations in West Africa?!!? More B.S. propaganda from the MSM. Yes it's bad but if you're going to report something do a thorough job, not just on something that suits your own interest like discouraging people from buying gold. This is a direct attack on Ron Paul's monetary policy about going back to the gold standard. Wake up people!! It's more B.S. from the Main Stream Media. NBC is a Wall Street corporate shill.

  • how about the price of oil, the price of financial speculation, the price of arms dealing... dumbass NBC trying to keep the price of gold down. I work in a gold mine in the heart of Nevada. We go thousands of hours without a single injury and support local communities with jobs, taxes, and wealth. What a shit piece by NBC

  • Dont worry, our kids here in the US inject the mercury through vaccinations.

  • @Intuition2010 We don't when it reaches a certain point to be exported first world countries are paying open market prices the people that are ripping them off are the buyers direct from the miners and the mine owners themselves.

  • $30 per gram! They are only getting 60%. I will pay them at least 80% and educate them on safety protocols.
