MAD satirized "Peanuts" over the years, and Schulz himself particiated in a 1962 article where the magazine asked several cartoonists to submit their idea of what an "ideal" strip would be for them to draw [he gave them one where a flower watches a leaf fall from a tree, commenting, "Stupid leaf!"]. He enjoyed their endless parodies of his strip, and reciprocated with the gag at the end of this one.
