Not unintentional... he starts out mocking the couple's situation... then when the theme is set he strikes the chord that the character really is getting driven mad with his life
He did similar with Creepy Doll, it would seem, in the end where he (seems to) suggests that the protagonist really is just slipping into insanity... and whether or not there really is a doll is debatable.

The song is about how someone thinks that they want to live in the suburbs and work toward it their whole life, but are shallow and only do it because it was what they thought they wanted, and never really bothered to try anything else. This leads them to feel empty and distant, because in the long run, they find out that they didn't want the suburban lifestyle.
It is not about everyone in the suburbs, just the people who live there because they think that's what they are expected to do.

It is depressing on purpose.

I really don't mean to sound rude, but I'm not sure what the song means...

Wow, yes I agree.
I guess this is a true ode to sad mediocrity.
This is probably the most unintentionally depressing song that also manages to be amusing. I had no idea until now that JoCo was that.... deep.

I think it's all about how the struggle to "keep up with the Joneses" and maintain a level of normality that the rest of society thinks you should attain (picket fence, house in the suburbs, chain restaurants everywhere) can kill some peoples' souls.
