While in Pune, India, I met an excellent drummer & percussionist named Vatayan, who often plays on the meditation resort there. Vatayan, in turn, introduced me to Himanshu, a very down-to-earth young man who has a passion for playing the bansuri and other bamboo flutes. He's as crazy about bamboo flutes as I am about the Native American variety, so it goes without saying that we hit it off straight away! Like me, hes only been at it for around two years, but his skill is already considerable, and his passion for playing shines through. Incidentally, most of his 20+ flutes were made by Eric the flute maker, whom he raved about. We met up at Himanshus beautiful house, and the three of us had a very fun impromptu jam in his living room. He had been fiddling around on his keyboard in the key of C major just prior to this, so there we stayed. I put both my High Spirits Merlin high C and Condor bass C to work trying to keep going in the major scale. Yes, the video is rather dark and grainy, but I think you can see and hear that we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. Fun stuff, indeed!
Excellent quality bamboo flutes by Eric, the flute maker:
