The "national song" of this British colony was approved for use in the island by the United Kingdom in 1992. An endeavour of Chief Minister Reuben Meade to have a unique song for the island, he instituted a nation-wide contest for a national song. The winning entry is now used as a local anthem, used in sporting events and local ceremonies, while the national anthem of the island remains "God Save the Queen".

"God Save the Queen", (alternatively "God Save the King"), is the National Anthem of Montserrat. It is the national anthem of the United Kingdom and her territories and dependencies. In countries not previously part of the British Empire, the tune of "God Save the Queen" has also been used as the basis for different patriotic songs, though still generally connected with royal ceremony.The authorship of the song is unknown, and beyond its first verse, which is consistent, it has many historic and extant versions: Since its first publication, different verses have been added and taken away and, even today, different publications include various selections of verses in various orders.In short, as an Overseas British Territory the official national anthem of Montserrat, is that of the United Kingdom's, "God Save the Queen". However in 1992 the Chief Minister instituted a local anthem to celebrate Montserrat's unique heritage. As such the local anthem was called "National Song".
