@jcadlols I don't agree, at these speeds, true wind come way from the original wind angle I would suppose you mention + he's way out of the shadow as he's in front of the sails of the cat. No sailor would be dumb enough to stay in such an area + he's acheiveing an equal speed at the end of the vid when he's on the windward side.
-
@jcadlols That would be true if he wasn't a midships of the tri, look, at the angle of the wind, where he is he almost looses wind, but not quite, good point though
-
You surely can't say he's in the wind shadow unless you know the point of sail...If he's beam reaching he's got plenty of clean breeze!!
-
@RockyPtSailor not so...more wind=bigger sea state...the cat isnt going to get airborne constantly which means it would maintain higher speeds...maybe in perfect conditions(the lee side of a island with no elevation. no elevation wouldnt prevent wind but would prevent waves). this tri in 40 knots open ocean would be fine...the windsurfer...well "Pan pan pan" if you dont know what "pan pan pan" is(w/o looking it up), there is no point in disagreeing with me or trying to argue. its not bread

@Sensail if you guys want to get all crazy you can say yes he is in the true wind windshadow of the cat. but at the speeds they are moving the apparent wind angle is so far forward that he is actually well out of it. these guys are probably on a beam reach and at times the windsurfer is directly to leeward of the tri's true wind but soon as they move, true wind turns apparent and the board is just ahead of the shadow. the technical term for your "advantageous leeward position" is "lee bow"
-
oh no I want to go windsurfing now!!
-
He should have luffed him up, Mast a-beam and all that.
-
@Sensail Um, yeah you're right. I'd forgotten about this 2 year old comment. But yes, i do sail. :)

@jcadlols, I must totally disagree. He is not surfing in the wind shadow, he is now in the "advantageous leeward position". It is a well - known fact in sailing. I think you can find a lot information about it.. It's not so obvious, but quite interesting and it could be really usable if you surf or sail sometimes, especially if you compete.
the wind surfer is in the cat's wind shadow almost all of the time (lot less wind), so he would be quicker on the left hand side= probably beating the cat.
