Maybe it's that it's a big process. It could lag everything else while recording. Also, maybe your graphics is up too high and your computer can't handle it. Also remember that FRAPS is defaulted to record at 30 fps, so it's going to drag down your gaming to 30 fps and it'll feel like lag to you.
I'm not sure. I'm no expert.

No. I have 1440x900. I think youtube just does that....
I don't know why it's horrible in normal mode.
