Thanks a lot for your reply. I dont know if the regulation here is the same for the Europeans and the Americans. As far as i know, the investment and commercial banks in the US are separated and they are like the same bank in Germany.

Cos they're not allowed to "gamble" directly, so they invest in this type of company and keep themselves firewalled, in theory [ha].

My question is why did the commercial bank or the investment do the MBS by themselves rather than set up a SPE to issue the stocks so they might be able to save some money in the process.
