Jess Jackson, part of the Stonestreet Stables ownership team that purchased Rachel Alexandra this week, said Friday he wants his new filly to run in the Preakness. She can, as long as 14 other horses nominated for the Triple Crown in the early nominating don't enter. She's out if that happens.
Gary Stute, the trainer of Papa Clem, was also nonplussed by the news. He saw the finish line at Pimlico, and then he saw Rachel Alexandra.

"That filly is in a different world than the rest of us," he said. "She is something spectacular. I'm trying to convince Bob Baffert to enter another horse, because if he enters another horse, we'd already have 14 entries and she'll be on the sidelines. To be honest, it really disappointed me [to learn the filly might run] because ... I thought I had one heck of a shot in the Preakness."

Baffert not only hasn't entered a second horse, the California trainer hasn't entered his first, Pioneerof the Nile, although he is tentatively scheduled to arrive at Pimlico on Wednesday for the draw. Pioneerof the Nile finished second in the Derby. If he shows, the top four horses from that race will be in Baltimore to take on Rachel Alexandra.

  • @spam1237 Curlin only ran once in the Dubai. @horseyaddt, As for Well Armed, he was a good horse-won a few Gr I, and II races. Like I say it is always the same song "weak field" crap.

  • I could do without "Bo-rail" buy I loved Rachel. She was so high octane.

  • I disagree horseaddict. Most people would retire a top class horse like Curlin at 3 and however you get the proceeds from breeding. Look at him winning in Dubai twice, and coming back home to win and then giving his best on turf and synthetics. Which he is breed.does better on dirt.

  • One- Rags to Riches raced in the Belmont Stakes, she was still the same afterwards, she had been injured in the Gazelle which ultimately led to the end of her career.

Two- Zenyatta has never raced against colts, we don't know how good she is, so fairly we can say RA is better. (RA obviously is still the same because she broke the track record in the Mother Goose and won by 19 lengths)

  • Yes it was. He beat real horses in the Classic. Dubai was good, but I wasn't something I will forever remember.

14 lengths was fun to see,and I love Well Armed but it was a weak field and hes not a very good horse, face it.

    Curlin's stock didn't drop,should have though.

  • Curlin's Classic wasn't better than his Dubai race. His performance in Dubai was amazing. Well Armed won the DWC by 14 lengths. He only won like that because Curlin wasn't in there breathing down his neck every step of the way and got an easy lead. Curlin's stock didn't drop last year. He won a second HOY title.

  • Well, you cant really prove that-since Jess used all his big cash to buy Curlin-no one ever got the chance to own him as a 4 year old. Good for Jess for speaking out on Meds-maybe he should have a chat about that with his main trainer,Steve. I don't see how Jess is any better for this sport than other big time owners? No,I was excited about Curlin running as a 4 year old. But,his wow factor dropped last year. The DWC? Ha! I'd say his Classic was better. Well Armed is okay+weak field=DWC 2009.

  • Most other people wouldn't have kept Curlin around to race at 4. Jess Jackson is good for racing. Jess Jackson is very outspoken about making race day medications illegal. He kind of helped get the ball rolling with that. I didn't say he was a racing god, but he is very good for this sport. Better than 99% of the other owners out there. I guess you didn't want to see Curlin race as a 4 yo? Curlin had his best race as a 4 yo...the DWC. I guess you didn't see Well Armed this year.
