Sometimes you have to sacrifice a shallow and pretty line drawing for a deep and ugly painting.
It is always more important for a work of art have guts than for it to be a "pretty little picture".
Like when Picasso said, "When a new painting is born it is ugly, like a newborn baby" maybe that isnt the exact quote but you should get the point. New and never before seen things are hard on the eyes. After time they become beautiful. At first they are a bit ahead of their time..
"Paintings are not meant to decorate apartments, they are an attack against the enemy. Any painting, any good painting, ought to bristle with razor blades"
-another relevant Picasso quote. Picasso knew that the unknown is what people are afraid of. It is the enemy he speaks of. He also knew that painting was much much more than a form of decoration. It was a form of magic and shamanistic exorcism.
Anyway..that is the philosophy behind it. Picasso the genius provides us a philosophical framework whereby we can create and discover our own ways of challenging that eternal enemy of man:
the unknown.

I love the style of this painting, it has a lot of life to it,here is one of my favorite qoutes , in light of what you were saying in the description,- '' Instead of trying to render what I see before me, I use color in a completely arbitrary way to express myself more powerfully''-Vincet Van Gogh
