a short section from my video, Bowl Turning from Basic to Master.

Here I am attempting to show useful techniques for sharpening two types of grind on Bowl, the clean cutting and traditional 'straight across' grind after the more
agressive and fashionable Swept Back grind.
in other sections of teh video i show how a gouge actually cuts, as well as exercises fro teaching your hands real mastery of these rewarding tools.

  • If your experience with a jig and slip stone has not gained you sharper better formed tools you should try doing a course with a master and learn how to make the wood sing.

i do one to one for people who think they already know so they dont upset people who really want to learn.

  • Learn to grind the edge the way you want it . A jig will help you until you are more skilled. But one day you will say to yourself," I need my gouge to be shaped like this" and you will avoid using the jig. Also the slip stone is not necessary and experience will tell you that if you use a slipstone or a Torment wet grinder, you will first use the tool, then go and grind it free hand on a regular bench grinder so that it cuts well.

  • That's really well documented stuff mate! Thanks for sharing! :)
