Partial Transcript: "On Tap - Delirium Tremens

Hi. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are drinking a beer that was named the "Best Beer in the World" at the 1998 World Beer Championships. I'm talking about Delirium Tremens from the Huyghe (HOY-ga) Brewery in Belgium.

The brewery was founded in 1906 by Leon Huyghe.

Delirium Tremens is a Belgian Strong Pale Ale with 8.5% ABV. They use 3 different strains of yeasts for fermentation. Huyghe began producing Delirium in 1989. It is now their flagship offering and they call it their "very best beer" on their website.

What's the meaning of the name? Delirium Tremens, or "the DTs", is latin for "trembling madness". It is a violent sickness induced by withdrawal after alcohol abuse.

Q&A

Delirium Tremens gets a (???) on the BBA Scale. What's your favorite beer from Huyghe? Do you know my friend Todd Huyghe? Let us know in the comment section. Thanks for watching. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority."

  • I tend to agree w/ Chef most of the time more so than anyone else, we must have very similar tastes and opinions on beers.

  • @PbNAphasia That's part of the idea behind our show is that I want the guys to give their own personal opinions. The idea is that you would be able to take the opinion of the person you can relate to the most and use their recommendations.

  • Need to re try this, I had a pint once two years ago. I remember enjoying it.

  • @MrCrim123 My beer memory is only about 24 hours. I impressed that you can remember a beer you had 2 years ago.

  • @AgileHProductions Well it was one of the first "real" beers I had when I turned 21.

  • @MrCrim123 That's a good milestone.

  • i agree with your panelists, this is definitely a solid 8. it's an engaging and balanced beer. while DT may no longer qualify as "best in the world" it still stacks up pretty favorably against any other beer of the same style.

  • @tomcaroscio There is a limit to it though. Once IBUs pass 100 things can't get any hoppier to the human tongue.

  • @ChadzBeerReviews Heard that!

  • Back in 98 there wasn't much American craft beer scene so anything Belgian won all the awards.
