Nice urban legends, but these Germans in the crowd adored Kennedy for the things he said and never thougt about a donut. This legend was made by the New York Times, but if you like to believe in it, do it.
There is no difference saying "Ich bin ein Berliner" or "Ich bin Berliner", but that "Ich bin ein Berliner" just states, that he is one of them. "Einer vor euch".
Im Publikum lacht übrigens keiner über ihn.

I just gave my 1,5 year old daughter a jelly doughnut (A berliner where im from)
and she just walked around saying ''liner liner liner''
And i came to think of this and i just had to see it..
Bush should have made a follow up to this when he visited Denmark. ''I am a danish''

Thank you so much for voicing my sentiments. JFK was loved before he was killed. But his death elevated him to a different level. There was greater respect - a reverance. There was that realization that we had this sensational President - well we kind of knew it but we did fully realize it until he was gone. We took him for granted when he was alive -- and when he was gone - it was the realization that the loss was huge.

But then the joke wouldn't work, because there is no pastry called "Dane". He could go to Hamburg and Frankfurt though, and call himself a hamburger and a frankfurter.
