BusinessShaky Economy Awaits College GraduatesShaky Economy Awaits College GraduatesThe Associated PressDespite an uncertain economy, there is encouraging news for graduates about to enter the job market. (May 19)(College grad video .. expected this Sunday from Georgetown) Graduation time in America. This year's celebration comes with a backdrop of an uncertain economy, spurred by the dampening impacts of the housing slump and rising food and energy prices. But the job market has remained relatively firm in the face of these troubles. The nation's unemployment rate recently put at 5 percent. A time for optimism for those ready to work. Paul Hughes, graduating with an MBA from American University in Washington is one of the lucky ones. He has a job. A native of Grenada, he has friends from abroad in the U.S. who aren't so lucky. • That piece of paper is trash unless its in the Medical and Law field. Colleges are big business. Its about the money

  • Rates of college graduates are increasing, number of jobs is decreasing...

It's no surprise that I've been out of college for over a year now and still don't have salaried employment. I work two waitressing jobs just to barely be able to afford my $700 a month student loan payments that I'll be paying til I'm almost 50. They need to start telling all of these incoming college students to save themselves now and don't even bother. It's about work experience now, not a piece of paper.

Exactly! My mom graduated with a bs degree in accounting back in 2004. She only got one job that was actually in her field of work that she worked from October 2005 to August 2006. She hasn't been able to find a job in her field ever since and took jobs as seasonal tax person, cashier and nail filer to name a few. She even said that when she was finding a job in her field it was hard because a lot of jobs require some type of experience.

  • The unemployment rate was 5% back in 2008 but now it's about 23% according to one 60 Minute piece as of January 2011.

  • @1981footboy Law is not a good job market unless you graduate from the top of the class in a top 10 law school... in fact you may be working as a county clerk which requires no law degree... Medicine is awesome but very expensive... takes a doc 10 years to pay off student loans... plus a family physician may only make $70K after taxes...

  • posted May 19 2008 what a difference over 2 and a half years make we have

lost nearly 8 million jobs since this time

  • "not as bad as expected"

The AP is delusional about where this country is headed, straight for the shit can.

    Abandon ship!

  • @starlite100 sadly, i regret it. I am seriously considering an apprenticeship or trade. You can without a doubt, always find and have a job.

  • If you live in LA. Have a huge shlong and can last long in bed. You might just have a position doing scenes for 200 to 500 bucks an hour. 3 days a week. That's like 1500 a week? 1500 x 4--that's 6000 a month! 6,000 x 12--That's 72,000 a year. Somedays you might not want to do it, but that's PORN for ya!

  • I think people are starting to realize the truth, WE'VE BEEN LIED TO!!!! Getting a college degree is the biggest scam of all time. Even Bernie Madoff couldn't scam as much money as colleges can.

  • @preiify They need to make a tort against too much off-shoring.

  • There is a reason our economy is so horrible. I don't think our economy can ever really be healthy again given the debt we've racked up. And we will never handle our atrocious debt until we address our corrupt monetary system.

At the heart of this is the Federal Reserve.

Watch this and pass it on.
