Even this is a serious course I always must smile when I her saying the word for "hungry".
In German this sound is used to indicate that you are close to vomiting . . .
However this video is worth a five star rating !

so does "lei" mean tired?
So could I say, "Wo shi hen lei"
Would that mean I am very tired?

yes, "lei" is tired. you can say "wo hen lei le" - you don't need the "shi" here. cheers

"ma" is usually used but not always (sorry about the fuzy rules ;-) Here you might use another "filler" word "ah" at the end. And you could also add the word you "ni" at the begining. So you might say: "ni ke bu ke ah?" "ni e bu e ah?" "ni lei bu lei ah?" "ni tong bu tong ah?". Hope this makes sense. Cheers.
