I think that apple does that on purpose to make people upgrade to their new products. The same thing happened to me and my first gen ipod nano.

1) Slide the hold button button to hold position (red showing) and back
2) hold down the center button and play/pause on the ring until it goes into "Disk Mode" (you may have to try this a few times -- it seems to work better in the beginning of the loop).
Now you can connect back up to your computer and do a restore your factory settings (which gives you a perfectly workable iPod with no content).

there is no such thing as software failure using ipod the worst thing could happen is lost your data how to fix it easy!(except for hardware failure which is rarely happen) try to upload the new firmware and you can even download hem for free....all you got todo is try!
-
try this next time instead of sending it to apple just right click on the ipod volume drive and click format and it completely erases everything on your ipod and then try to update again and u shouldn't have a problem
I use a mac. music wouldn't play. I couldn't get it to do anything other than this. I did a full reset and half way through loading back all the songs it started doing this even while plugged in. I took it to Apple and they said it was a failing hard drive. I paid $30 for a replacement unit, and they gave me a brand new one. I didn't try the new 60GB replacement...i'm selling that one and bought a new 80GB video. that one works fine now.
