A member of the Lily family, the North American endemic genus- Calochortus- is one of the most beautiful. The common names for this genus are mariposa lily and cats ear for the species with fringes of hairs on the tepals. This species of Calochortus is Lyall's mariposa or cats ear, and is found exclusively in Central Washington.
Hey I was wondering if maybe you can help me I actually live on the east coast, but some one is sending me some mariposa lily seeds, which I intend to be a strictly inside plant (no messing with the ecosystem) and I don't have much to go on in ways of caring for it, if there's any info you have it would be greatly apperciated. thanks, and the cats ears are lovely.

I doubt that this plant would do well indoors. Like many of our native plants it grows during the springtime, but then desiccates and is dormant after it sets seed in late June. I've tried to grow some natives with more water and nutrients than they would normally have, but they still seem to go dormant at a certain time of year. Really, this might be a good plant for a perennial bulb bed, as daffodils and tulips do the same thing after they bloom too.
