An Essex County corrections officer was shot and killed in her car early today, shortly after leaving a social club that caters exclusively to law enforcement and government employees, authorities and family members said.
Debora Ferreira, 32, was found unresponsive in her car shortly before 3 a.m. today on Halsey Street, a block from Club Mentors, where she had been earlier.
Emergency personnel rushed her to nearby University Hospital, but she died minutes later from a bullet wound to her shoulder and torso, Essex County Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose said.
By last evening, no arrests had been made and police had no motive for Ferreira's slaying, leaving her family and the law enforcement community wondering how someone could have killed the Newark native who didn't seem to have an enemy in the world.
