That's easy to check the veracity of a Wikipedia article by looking at the edit history and the listed references. And that does support that if it has Celtic roots it's indirect through inspiration rather than through adaption of an existing tune.
This song's been played by way more corps than just SCV. Check out the 80's. Cadets were all about Copland. BK did this one year, if I remember right. It's been done in to the ground.
I loved it just as it is. It's the combination of Ansel Adams, Aaron Copeland, and Simple Gifts that made me want to watch this one and not the others. Thank you!
It sounds beautiful. This hymn reminds me of Morning Prayer and the chanting and hymns we sing, all of which I can sum up with the great Jewish intonation: Hear O Israel, the Lord your God is One. Blessed is the name of the Lord.
You are right that the proper pictures would be of the Appalachian Mountains. These pictures are from the Western USA and all from Ansel Adams, who was Aaron Copland's contemporary and considered by many to be his visual equivalent.
