Sampaguita is the national flower of the Philippines, my ancestral home. Sampaguita's distinct sweet, heady fragrance is its unique feature. The essential oil from the flowers is similar to jasmin. Sampaguita was imported into the Philippines in the 17th century from the Himalayan areas. The Sampaguita is a native part of the Philippine landscape for centuries. The plant is originally from India and is grown throughout India today.

The haunting melody was composed at the turn of the century by Filipino composer Dolores Paterno and performed by Filipino Classical Guitarist Michael Dadap. The images used in the video are paintings of the famous Filipino painter Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972).

This song really makes me nostalgic. I still remember back then when I was a kid, my grandma will sing kundiman songs 'till i get to sleep. I still remember the show on TV (Aawitan Kita) where all those kundiman songs are played every week. She even told me that when I grow up, I should sing at least a kundiman song to a girl :-) I just hope that our wonderful traditional classic kundiman songs be re-introduced to the younger generations.
