My first online guitar lesson focuses on breaking out of the 5 pentatonic box patterns that most guitar players learn when they first start playing. These never made any sense to me and I found it VERY hard to connect one pattern to another (frankly I had trouble even REMEMBERING) the 5 COMPLEX patterns. This lesson builds up 5 MINI-PATTERNS (4 notes across two strings) and shows you how to connect them together so that you can move in any direction on the neck in any key.

  • THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

  • After about 4 minutes I was going to reply with a "duh, you just played the first 4 notes of each of the pentatonic positions, one after another" but then I hit 4:30 and the epiphany punched me in the mouth. I had never, ever seen the connection of the patterns in any other way than up and down the frets.. nicely done! Is this borrowed, or did you "discover" this?

  • Great job. Really enjoyed that. Simplified a lot of things

  • craziness

never thought of it that way

    thanks man

  • I have been confused about this for a number of years and no one could explain it so it clicked, until now. Thanks so much!!

  • Such an awesome lesson,

    thanks

  • Thanks that helped me sooooo.. much!! Great lesson, Ive never seen it explained like that. Most teachers say memorize the patterns. Gets confusing but this was excellent. Easy to remember.

  • Thanks. I've never heard it explained like that before. Very interesting. I'll try it out.
