Ah James, quick-witted, opportunistic, well educated, ruthless, uncouth, bisexual with a flair for the dramatic and a love of rude jokes. They don’t make them like that any more,God save the king indeed.
Thing is...James I didn't actually think Catholicism was evil. His wife was Catholic, and her certainly tolerated that, expressly giving the reasons why he was willing to do so. A bit overblown there- much though I enjoy Carlyle's performance.
@BRUTUALTRUTH Maybe you would have preferred the Next in line after James in 1588, the thoroughly English Arabella Stuart? Mind you as she was in the pay of both the King of France, and if succeeded to the throne of England, would have, (as it would have turned out to be), married into the direct French line, would have given England over to the French. And being Catholic, would have brought England under the Rule of Rome. Maybe you would have preferred that to James ancestor Queen Elizabeth II?
Is that Michael Fassbender playing Guy Fawkes?
