probably a stupid question - but can this thing be used as a monitor of sorts?

The box flashes 800x480 but what good is that source resolution if the output is limited to 480x234?
The JPEG format is severely restricted. Pics processed and saved in Photoshop were not compatible with it. Encoding to its native 480x234 with 1:1 (square) aspect ratio yielded some ugly distortion and pixelation because some mysteriously awkward internal processing appears to take place.
If you encode to 800x480 the image'll be slightly squeezed because that's not what the ratio really is. Urgh

This product was not without its flaws. For starters, he manual is very sketchy and lacks detail about the video formats. It doesn't answer questions like what the preferred codec is or what the optimal compression settings are for the best quality vs. performance balance, etc. If took a lot of trial and error to figure that out on my own. If you plan to take its usage slightly beyond what it was originally intended for, you're in for some frustration.
