  • the guadalcanal campaign is also where all five sullivan brothers died aboard the same ship, the USS juneau as it was trying to limp back to espirito santo after being hit with a torpedo.it was then struck by another torpedo from japanese submarine i-26,and sank quickly.

  • and when he gets to heaven,to saint peter he will tell, another MARINE reporting sir,i've served my time in HELL.

  • oops,i meant admiral mikawa.good thing he didn't follow up after the battle.

  • some of the nastiest naval combat too,the battle of savo island for instance.the US NAVY took a beating during that one.good thing admiral mikuma decided to withdraw instead of following up.

  • @ChopstickBrando But that's what made the triumph so glorious.. To this day on Guadalcanal in the country of the Solomon Islands, the citizens stand when the Marines Hymn is played - they may belong to the "British" Commonwealth, but their hearts are still USMC.

  • This is spiritualist music in the aftermath of that focal struggle for Henderson field which was a strategic combat rest and refueling for Allied aircraft intent on offering some protection to Allied naval forces in the Solomons.which struck out of nowhere at long range. forces were convinced they were being decimated by mines. Guadalcanal foothold began turning the tides of the Pacific to favor Allied forces

  • Guadacanal was hell, at least my Dad told me so. He was there.

  • @ChopstickBrando But it ended with a US victory, so it's ok to be upbeat.

  • Great march, nasty battleground.

I remember when conductor Arthur Fiedler of the Boston Pops used to perform this on Veterans' Days.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • oddly upbeat music for a battle that saw some of the nastiest ground combat of WW2...
