I appreciate the sentiment, but I want to clarify my point. I think, of all people, Chopin could probably pull off any interpretation he wanted to. But I don't think there is such a thing as the "perfect version", even if it's the composer's.

I disagree. I don't think the composer has unassailable rights on the best performance. I think your response, which precludes the possibility of someone "outperforming" Chopin, is quite symptomatic of the pseudo-religious reverence in which the canonized composers are now held. My problem with your view is that it implies that there is THE one, best interpretation, and THE one, best performer. This is not a very inspiring view, and it has a lot more to do with religion than with art.
