VRay's environment fog is not cheap. It's physical, it scatters light in a realistic manner. The only downside is being able to use only one type of fog at a time.

The bull hair was generated with Shave and a Haircut. Since Shave was new to V-Ray in late 2010 we received help from conversations between DD (specifically Ray H, a strong TD on the show), Chaos Group, and Alter Inc. Following some plug-in updates and scripting from our TD, the hair became an afterthought and bull renders were faster than the robots.
Worth noting that hair was isolated to the neck, tail and groin. The rest of the body was faked hair with shading.
