As Avatar sweeps across China, driving debate about the future success of China's film industry. Imagination is cited as critical weakness in China film making.
@TobiasTunkler Lust & Caution is a good example: the Chinese gov. told Ang Lee to omit parts of the story he wished to tell. He complied, unfortunately, making his movie into a piece of propaganda that demonized the Japanese (as usual) and made its Chinese protagonists look blameless (and they were NOT blameless in his original story). China can't match the art of the free world while its artists are in chains.
It's tough for Chinese artists to create their visions while within the confines of a authoritarian gov. Many have suggested that Avatar is critical of America's old policies toward the indigenous people. The USA government does not interfere because of its people's freedom to express such a position. In China, however, a film that's critical of the gov. might lead to severe punishment for the creators (although great Chinese movies like To Live have been made).
because the Chinese are all about politic, the stupid commies don't allow the others to think.
