  • Fundamental jiu-jitsu is absolutely important, and you will not be successful with more complex techniques if your basics are not totally solid. That said, jiu-jitsu is constantly evolving, and many techniques that are considered "fancy" are making headway on the competition scene. Just because it's a newer, different position doesn't mean it should be disregarded. BJJ is not what it was 10 years ago. Guys like Cobrinha, the Mendes brothers, Jeff Glover, Ryan Hall embody this evolution

  • VERY well said and agree 100%.

  • the problem with bjj techniques on youtube, at least for me, is that they're kind of like peanuts :) i mean one is never enough - you just watch one, then another, then yet one more etc. but at the end you're still 'hungry' (that is, you ain't really learned much). this is why i like those Keith Owen lectures even more, because i always feel that i got to know something essential from them.

  • @larryz101 @larryz101 To be fair, the rubber guard was not developed into the system it is today back when Eddie was competing. However he used the nice little Jailbreak->Cocoon->Fake Sweep->Triangle to be Royler. Not saying all of that was his original stuff, but thats kinda where his bottom game built on good flexibility came from. But you are absolutely right, there are so many awesome guards for no gi jiujitsu it isnt even funny. Soon rubber guard basics will be considered basics period.

  • Man,I wish my instructor would break it down like that.......gonna wreck some big guys today!

    Thank You sir!

  • This is great! Definitely one of the most important topics and no school goes over this in enough detail.

  • this guy seems pretty cool hes funny

  • hi there. thanks again for posting mr. owen's videos. what does he mean when he says get your toes 'right' at 2:17? is there a specific angle you need to move your feet or toes

  • @PanKrato exactly my friend if the best p4p grappler can use a white belt gameplan and dominate everybody than there must be something to these basics. everyone is trying to use fancy stuff like 50/50 guard, de le riva guard, turtle guard, deep half guard, dont get me wrong it is all greay but in the end being the agressor getting the takedown, passing the guard, and gaining dominate positions and finishing is what bjj comes down to. and roger proves it everytime he competes.

  • I'm not trying to act like I know it all, I was responding to comments below about how people say you should "only stick to basics", and voicing my observation and opinion on the matter. This video is a basic re-guarding video, which Im very familiar with, but you never know if you might pick up an extra detail here and there, even in the most basic videos. I never claimed to be "so good", but I do have a justifiable opinion when it comes to certain topics, just like you and everyone else here

  • @getthetapjj

you act like you know it all, if you are so good why are you looking up tutorials lol? gtfo.

  • @Submissions101 Hey Ari is chi a real energy? Or a philosophical way of describing focus? Thanks
