I think they used nonelethal weapons such as sand bags and plastic bullets. the pics you showed of cops with shot guns could be just shot guns with bean bags and plastic bullets. when chinese military decide to use live rounds, they usually have aks or qbzs. that is my 2 cents. it is sad that there were so many victims and damages.

Only a very small group of Uighurs follows AlQaeda because they believe AlQaeda would help them to break away from PRC. Most Uighurs in Chinese Turkistan are not sensitive politically but concern more on their livelihood, job opportunities and business. Overseas Uighurs normally promote independence which is quite different from native Uighurs thinking.

Uighurs in Chinese Turkistan follow a mild form of Islam, not fundamentalists. That is why you can see girls in Chinese Turkistan don't have to cover up their face while walking on the streets.
At the start of the demonstration in Urumqi, the Uighurs waved Chinese 5 stars national flag and asked for equality and freedom not independence from PRC.
However in the side streets of Urumqi, small groups of unemployed youngsters from Hotan or areas in South Chinese Turkistan organised to kill Hans.

Well, whatever little sympathy I have for the Uighurs is completely gone since the arrest of Uighur Al Qaeda terrorists in Norway a month back. I say let the Chinese take care of them because God forbid, we put them up in a plush prison in this country.

It is said that bilingual teaching is in force for both Chinese and Uighur language but in reality many subjects are taught in Chinese especially in Uiniversities in Chinese Turkistan.

Something you don't know, Uighurs under 18 and Uighur officials / communists are not allowed to attend Muslim teachings and temples. For advanced learning of Muslim faith they must go overseas or other Muslim countries.
As for the Uighur language, teachers who teach only Uighur in schools must also fluent in Chinese ( examination to qualify approved Chinese language level ) that in some cases only Han Chinese are qualified as former Uighur teachers are not fluent in Chinese.

The Chinese Government arent trying to supress (whatever it's spelled) their language or religion. They were just trying to teach them Chinese, they may continue to learn their language. I've lived in Xinjiang for six months, and never heard of any supression of Islamic by the CCP.
Han Chinese colonisation over Xinjiang Uyghurs in Western China is no different to European colonisation over American Natives...in both cases there was authoritative sociocultural dominance; perhaps even more and on a far larger (exterminative) scale in the latter case...really don't understand get why US has to criticise others when they themselves are a product of such acts.

@attcheung - - So the according to you it was a good thing when the Europeans colonized many parts of the world and the Americans moved the Native Americans off their lands. Should I thank you for that validation or feel sorry for you?

@PropagandaBuster History shows that these events just tend to occur; it may be seen as a good thing or a bad thing - the US may be a completely different place or not even exist as a country without European colonisation, but at the same time this led to the extermination of the Natives and their culture; Han Chinese occupation over Uyghurs in Xinjiang should be justified, at least by European Americans (since what they did was far worse to the natives).

@attcheung - Do you realize when you wrote, "extermination of the Natives and their culture," it screamed you know absolutely nothing about Native Americans other than quoting bumper sticker slogans?
