One thing puzzles me slightly.. Would it not be necessary to recalibrate the screen for each player in order to be completely fair if the screen was initially calibrated using one of the machines in the test?

The Law of diminishing returns will always apply,the more you spend the less you get back but it is worth the extra expence not only in engineering but quality of end product in this case Picture and sound even though its only 1s and 0s transmitted to the other equipment. For myself i would spend as much as possible on the pickup (Blu-Ray) then the Video monitor be it Projector or TFT Panel next the audio processor & amplification on to the Speaker system . so YES the player is the foundation
