Volcano Helicopter Trip, Hawaii Island September 2011

We flew the 'doors-off'' trip offered by Paradise Copters. I highly recommend the front-right seat. They make you wear a double-harness and you're so exposed to the elements, it's a huge rush.
This is the Pu`u O`o Crater and corresponding flow you may have heard about recently. Ironically, this was shot on the last day the flow was making any real progress. As of later in this day, September 25 2011, the flow had stopped going beyond Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park or DLNR / state land. So this is some of the last forward motion before this latest fissure quiets down for an indeterminate stretch.
In the video you will see the legendary Jack Thompson's house, the Lava House, or Lava-Side Inn you may or may not have heard of. Incredible stuff to see his kipuka. What a trooper.
Mahalo to Paradise for offering this sort of helicopter tour. Really is exciting with the wind roaring at you -- like off-roading in the sky -- and nothing between you and the lava below.
