In the light of the changing International Judo Federation(IJF) regulations, Sensei Guido and Sensei Nick of Pedro's Judo Center demonstrated the judo techniques that will become illegal for use in competition in 2010. In essence, the IJF bans all techniques where the attacker (tori) uses the hands to offensively grab the legs of the opponent (uki). As a result, judo techniques part of the curriculum since 1882, as well as techniques commonly observed in modern international Judo competition can not be used anymore as of this year. Historically, the IJF has banned many techniques that proved to be dangerous in competition and gave rise to injuries. The demonstration includes a selection of those, maybe forgotten, banned judo techniques.

  • Is that nick delpopolo in the blue gi?

  • @Chiragana yes it is.

  • I don't know exactly, the technique has been banned for 95 years. According to W. Muramoto in the ‘Furyu’ (The Budo Journal) “in its early days judo looked very much like a duel with no compromise". Numerous traumas and injuries, commonly occurring during contests triggered a process of elimination of the dangerous and risky techniques. In 1899 finger, wrist, knee and anckle-locks were banned. In 1916 the very popular knee-lock Ashi-Garami was banned.

  • All those leg throws forget them their all banned from judo.

  • @foleybarbarian all techniques in this video are banned, that was the topic of the demo...

  • 1:58 it tiotoshi. it is a locals tornament they might not want to see any broken knees.

  • there is no such thing as tiotoshi in judo. See comments below for correct name and reason why banned.

  • There's nothing wrong with kubi nage done correctly, there's no attack on the neck. A poor example of a "neck lock." Absolutely not illegal. Some of the leg grabs, it should be noted are not illgal in some circumstances.

  • Those kids sound really hyped up. Great vid

  • It's interesting to me that the "reason" for an illegal closed guard is "damage to internal organs." That's crap. It was to speed up the competition for the purposes of olympic competition. On the flip side, great demonstration. Sorry those are all banned for you. Thumbs up.

  • That looks painfully effiective

  • some of these can be done

  • excellent demonstration, and thanks for the popups with names/reasons
