Cruise of the United States Coast Guard Cutter Glacier in 1969 thorugh 1971. I am singing this Gordon Lightfoot song, and playing my Gibson 12 string guitar, which was with me aboard the Glacier. A couple of changes from the written record on the video. We took a 55 degree roll not a 65 degree roll when the Rogue waves hit. Also, checking my records, the rogue waves hit, about one day out from Anchorage Alaska, not in Cape Horn. Many of us on the Glacier, are square knot sailors. Crossing both pole circles, the 180, and equator. My cruise did it in less than a year. The footage was shot with an old 8mm camera, 40 years ago. The Edmund Fitzgerald song, is tribute to all sailors from all over the world, and the dangers that exist at sea.

  • I think I remember you singing and playing on the flight deck. I'll add bass and keys to your song and send it back to you as I have a studio and that's what I do.

  • @BLUNUTT That'd be cool, I think the 12 string is a little bit out of tune in the recording so I hope you can work it. "A something" Em, G and D. Are there any other names of crew you remember? Thanks joe

  • I was there 68&69 good and bad memories , thought I was gonna die 3 times. Jim Howell captjim1998@yahoo.com

  • @BLUNUTT .... Thanks and I think I remember your name, Engineman?

  • My Grandfather was Captain Opie Dawson. He was aboard the Glacier in 1968 I believe.

  • @Chew593 ... Sorry I didn't know him. Nice to hear from you!

I think you may have been off when the Glacier attempted to rescue the Argintine supply ship! I was on board and remember it as if it were yesterday. We lost two blades off the starboard prop. I was also one of the lucky ones that spent the week in Buenos Arias. Great song and great memories! I was on the deck force Bm3 Danner

  • I was aboard from July 1967 to November 1969. Durinf DF 69 we took a 55 degree roll soth of Cape Horn in what was called the "Screamin' 60's".

  • My dad is Fred Nichols (Frederick) I know that he was focused on electronics...an above deck guy. What your email address? I will pass it his way.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks! Was your dad's name, Pete? I think I remember a damage control man named Pete Nichols.
