Taken from the BBC broadcast of a 1990 Glyndebourne Festival performance.

Mozart: Marriage of Figaro

Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment
Conductor: Simon Rattle
Production: Peter Hall

Don Bartolo - Francois Loup

Aria La vendetta, oh, la vendetta!

In 1990 the Glyndebourne Festival had a little revolution in its sacred halls: Simon Rattle conducted a production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. What was so special about this production is the fact that for the first time in the festival's history an orchestra of period instruments was used. To up the ante, there was also a radical departure of its 56 year old established performance practice: Mozart was to be performed with full use of appoggiaturas and ornamentation.

  • Thank you, all of you, for your kind words. Although 70 now, I feel supported by your comments. I just keep doing recitals and they get excellent response. A glas of wine here or there, a masterclass here or there and my voice keep going and going! Alleluia!

  • @loupbass I enjoyed the legato line and more measured pace than is often the case. I would love to hear you as the king in Don Carlo, or Da Silva in Ernani, or Zaccaria in Nabucco. Have you sung these roles and are there recordings of them?

  • I had the privilege of studying with him at U of Maryland but now he's retired. God I miss him, I'm a bass so he was the best teacher in the world.

  • Lovely!

  • So many times singers sing this very choppy...I love the legato line that you keep through the entire piece. You never come off the voice once. The "patter" part always scares me...but after listening to this I now sing it with a lot more confidence. Bravo!

  • fantastic.

  • Beautiful singing loupbass, We are so fortunate that you have commented and let us know that you are continuing to sing, that is a blessing to all of us that listen to you.

  • @loupbass You have my dream job...singing comic roles like this! Bravo!

  • Je suis très impressionné par la prononciation surtout à 1:55 où en général c'est une belle bouillie, là c'est extrèmement clair et léger! J'adore! ET puis une version dynamique avec quelques petites variations très légères j'adore!
