When I was about 10 I saw a demo of how to start a fire with a tinder and flint and was instantly captivated. However to buy the kit would have been about half my entire wealth, and I didnt buy one... a decision which i regretted almost instantly and has burnt me ever since.

About 2 yrs back I bumped into the place by chance.

Now the date is 14th July 2008 and Im in the Tetons having a go at starting a fire with a tinder and flint.

  • I might add that I think you mean you visited Kitsap not Catsup. It's a beautiful place!

  • Yikes! I would hyperventilate, pass out into the fire and do some serious damage to my face and burn off all my hair! Anyway, I always wanted to buy one of those doo-hickies now I will. I wonder if dryer lint would be a good starter??? Thanks for posting.

  • @MillionairJoe

Because the tinder doesn't catch sparks as well as the charcloth.

Also you need to be forcefull with the blowing, you need to inject the oxygen into the embers to establish a flame.

  • why not just strike the sparks in the tinder in stead of that carpet shit, and prevent all the blowing bullshit.

  • I don't know... Seems like a bic lighter would be more efficient.

  • Why do people dislike this? He's not teaching you how to do it, he's just telling you about something he always wanted to do, its personal for him... Its like disliking you wanting to drink water, redicilous.

  • @spitoncat he can make more fires

  • very honest video.

a lot of effort is required to use flint and steel. there are videos that make it looks so easy. not easy to create spark, then you need the char cloth to catch one, and blowing it into a flame is the hardest part.

    please, carry a lighter. always.

  • I wonder if he feels good about his $60 fire. I think that he probably does. A fulfillment in life which was priceless to him.

    GRADE B

  • you did it made fire the old way cool!!!!!!!!!
