This beautiful song is from Fairport Convention's album Nine (1973). The lyrics are from a poem by Richard Lovelace (1642) and the music is by Dave Swarbrick. The clips are from Fly Away Home (1996).

  • who knows the origin of this song?

  • Richard Lovelace defended the king during the English Civil Wars and became famous as one of the cavalier poets. When Anglican bishops were banned from Parliament, Lovelace presented a petition calling for their restoration. For this he was imprisoned for seven weeks in Gate House, Westminster. While in prison he wrote To Althea.

  • I deliberately chose not to interpret this song in a political way but instead went for a loose interpretation of the theme - circumstances and conditions don't have to limit our dreams and ambitions. You can of course just enjoy the beautiful photography and the geese!

  • Of course, in real life, Canada geese are HORRIBLE birds. They crap everywhere polluting lakes and ponds, make a foul noise and bully smaller birds.

    They're good eating, though.

  • This song is just gorgeous, thank you so much for posting it.

  • A very beautiful combination of this song and the movie, they are almost in a beauty competition :). They both show that real freedom is not an easy score, but the outcome of love and dedication. Thank you for this lovely upload! I featured it on my channel today. Greetings from The Netherlands.

  • Hi... I really love this song for lots of years ;-) Quite good!!

  • God bless and keep you, Richard. God bless king Charles the Martyr.

  • @1northcountrygirl I keep coming back to listen and watch, thanks for sharing.

  • Great outro...

  • Very very nice ! Thanks so much ! :)

  • This is a stunning interpretation of a wonderous poem. One of my favourite Fairport tracks, subdued and subtle and equally as amazing as Matty and other classics
