  • Hi Pax. I wish I knew more about him but I was 4 years old when he died. My mother said he was very serious about music and didn't smile very often. My grandfather, Marty Pope, had a small band that played mostly in Brooklyn and Frankie, as my mother referred to him, couldn't seem to let his hair down and have fun with the music the way my grandfather did so they soon parted ways. I don't remember my Aunt Marie Kuhlman talking about him the few times I saw her before she passed away.

  • @MartyCourtney Thank you for trying and for the information provided. It gives a glimpse of this great singer's personality. I suspected he was a perfectionist. His singing came across to me that way.

  • Hello Pax41. You have a lot of Franklyn Baur's music. He was actually a distant cousin of mine. I never met him myself but my mother knew him well and I remember his sister, who I knew as Aunt Marie. My mother said he could also play the violin and played for a short time with my grandfathers band before he became famous. She spoke of his time with the Ziegfeld Follies and said his biggest hit with them was "Rainbow of Girls". He died in 1950 of what was simply called natural causes.

  • @MartyCourtney Wow, this is great to hear from a relative of Mr Baur. I would be very interested in any more information you have on him. Do you have any other photos? If I remember correctly he was only 46 when he died. I and others have often wondered what he did between the time he stopped recording in 1930 till his death. Wish he had continued to record, do you know why he stopped? Thank you

  • Franklyn Baur was extremely disillusioned with the reception of the concert he gave on his return from France.

Don't know the cause of his death, but he died in the house he was born in.

Superfluous addition to the fuller comments, but I must say that this is a nice posting.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • I did read those same facts about him too Corrie. It is so sad and one wonders if he tried after a single attempt.

  • What a lovely voice!

  • @mlr48

Finally discovered that the movie was called Moontide with Ida Lapino and Jean Gabin - 1942.

You can find DVD on Turner Classic Movies site

  • @mlr48 I think you are thinking about "So This Is Love" 1953 The Grace Moore Story starring Kathryn Grayson.

  • Anyone recall the name of the movie that featured this song - maybe in the 1940's? I remember seeing it and would love to find it again - it was a black and white movie - I saw it approx. 45-50 years ago on TV.
