Full Article: Most people in the Bangor/Orono are have experienced the Bangor City Forest and Orono Bog Boardwalk. They usually go for a specific reason, whether it be an early morning jog, educational purposes, or the beginning to a romantic 4th date. Yet these activities are not reserved for the local folk alone. For travelers into the area, we highly recommend this beautiful spot if you are looking for a true Maine experience.

The Orono Bog is a unique land area full of fascinating insects, trees, wild animals, and even a plant that is shaped like the pitcher of water on your living room table. I had the chance to experience all of these things when I met with Wildlife Biologist Jerry Longcore at the bog late last fall. Jerry knows everything there is to know about how bogs are created, how they are sustained, and the process of preserving these kinds of areas. This particular bog is kept in brilliant condition because of the wooden boardwalk that was built above it, and at approximately 1 mile around, it is perfect for the solo traveler or large family looking for a free afternoon activity.

In this second episode of JourneyMaineTV, you will get to listen to Jerry discussing what a bog actually is, along with some interesting aspects of the Orono Bog, and the process of how the Boardwalk itself was created. Jerry was a great host with endless knowledge, and has even invited us back to do more coverage of the bog during the spring and summer. You can head on over to the bog website at www.oronobogwalk.org to find out more information, and be sure to check out the calendar of free guided tours when you are planning your trip to the area.

This episode depicts the bog during a late fall day in 2009.

JourneyMaineTV, your first stop when looking into what to do in Maine, where to stay in Maine, and the people that make Maine such a great place to visit!
