Prominent Ethiopian women's rights activist Bogalech Gebre talks about the importance of education, FGM and what freedom means. Her work in the Kembatta area in Southern Ethiopia has achieved huge results in abolishing the practice of FGM. She also describes her fascinating journey from a rural village in Ethiopia to becoming a leading human rights activist. In this strong, emotional interview, Bogalech is not afraid to speak her mind.
I've been to Kembatta to see Boge's work and found an extraordinary place. For years, I've worked as a reporter and writer documenting human rights violations. Entering the town, watching children shouting her name, going down muddy banks to the stream where girls still fetch water, i felt for the first time that I had seen the BIRTH of human rights. And it wasn't just about girls. There were the elders, staffs in hand, both Amhara and Fuga (outcasts) ending ancient prejudice under her roof.
