Embedding journalists in this way had two principal effects on the reporting of the invasion: first, as in the past, the journalists grew to identify with the men theyre living with. And in this report we see some evidence of this: he said ahead of us US jets were still at work, and the shells flew over our heads, we crossed the bridge; so you get a sense of shared perspective between reporter and the soldiers. Second, operating like this, journalists only had a very small pool of sources to draw upon and can only present a very small scale, fragmented and decontextualised view of the conflict.
