I spent R&R in Sydney Mar 1971.I met gi's who had went AWOL there. It was hard to have to go back to combat in I corps. We all have to make choices.

As long as poorly-educated American kids with few prospects continue to believe the lazy application of the term 'hero' to all soldiers, and as long as the rest stick to their blind patriotism and mindless chants of 'USA! USA!', the environment for high enrollment rates will remain, and the government won't have to implement the draft. It was the drafting of ordinary Americans, and the stories these men told on their return, that helped do it for the Vietnam war.
