Sure, at first they never wrote their own music or played but that's because they were forbidden to. All of the Monkees, especially Nesmith and Tork who were already professional musicians hated the idea that they weren't allowed to play or write anything. Long story short, their first music supervisor got fired after an incident with Nesmith and starting from their third album Headquarters they started playing and writing on their own.
