I'm far not Penelope Cruz fan but she was really brilliant in this film - fantastic acting. Other actresses did no less impressive job. The storyline was unique and so touching. I wish my grandma could return.
Reality of the Spanish films can be related to real life, I'm Turkish and before watching Spanish movies I thought our Turkish movies (from 1990) are only realistic films around.
there are very sheltered or frankly somewhat racist. Spanish film is nothing like that. It shows you a prejudice that is real when not merely one sided. We can also use the example of African Americans, or Asians. When was the last time we saw Asians portrayed as murderers? or a male asain as a sex symbol? taboo? We almost always see white women being either really well off because of their husbands or because of their bodies. We never see the reality. The working class white woman or fat white
Our country either shows a very rated G type or a very racisit and fake version. I mean what is up with constantly showing Hispanic people as waiters and maids and gangsters. Hello have you been to L.A? There are so many high achieving Hispanics. The mayor of the city is hispanic; there are countless number of Lawyers, Police officers, Detectives, Soldiers, Business proff, Professors ext etx.. but our society does not show that why?? racism, or they few people that get to chose what gets out
become feature films. Or who the actors (female and male) are. It is never the good talent. It is always some dumb story and dumb actors. There is no real diversity. Which is frankly stupid because our nation is so diverse. We need to show a real sense of our people like the Spanish do. We need to show those other ethnicities and how they really mingle and don't like in the movie princesas with the spanish and the dominican prostitutes. Or in volver with penelope and the cuban immigrant lady.
there is like a billion reason why i feel that spanish films are superior to conventional hollywood films. One simple reason is that these stories,al though fiction, can easily (and reasonably) be something that anyone can relate to. Another reason is that Spanish films do not put such an emphasis on that untouchable social elite to market their films. There is a real sense of art in these films. As an american, I feel very dissapointed in the way my country decides what ideas get chosen to
almodovar fans???? fans of Spanish/Latin film on here???? I am undertaking some research. the general gist of the research is a comparison to conventional Hollywood film, is there anyone here who could express what it is about Latin/Spanish cinema that makes it different (maybe better) than hollywood film.
If you could help I would really really appreciate it!

El que pueda verla, que la vea, se la recomiendo. Y no sólo por la magnífica actuación de Penélope; por mucho más.
